Fly Anatomy

Relevant Material: "Flies are insects of the order Diptera, the name being derived from the Greek δι- di- "two", and πτερόν pteron "wing". Insects of this order use only a single pair of wings to fly, the hindwings having evolved into advanced mechanosensory organs known as halteres, which act as high-speed sensors of rotational movement and allow dipterans to perform advanced aerobatics. Diptera is a large order containing more than 150,000 species including horse-flies,[a] crane flieshoverfliesmosquitoes and others..." (Fly - Wikipedia)

Relevant Material: "Flies spread diseases like Salmonella, E. coli, cholera, typhoid fever, and dysentery through bacteria, viruses, and parasites carried on their bodies and in their guts. They transmit these pathogens by landing on food or contaminated surfaces, potentially causing food poisoning, severe diarrhea, and other serious illnesses. Some flies, such as tsetse flies, also transmit diseases through painful bites, including African sleeping sickness.

How Flies Spread Disease
  • Mechanical Transmission:
Flies carry pathogens on their hairy legs and bodies, picking them up from garbage, feces, and dead animals. When they land on food or food preparation surfaces, they transfer these germs, a process known as mechanical transmission.
  • Regurgitation and Defecation:
Houseflies also regurgitate digestive fluids onto food to liquefy it before eating, and they may defecate on food or surfaces, further contaminating them with disease-causing agents.
  • Bites (for biting flies):
Some fly species, like tsetse flies and stable flies, feed on blood and can transmit pathogens directly to humans and animals through their bites.
Examples of Diseases Spread by Flies
  • Bacterial Infections:
Salmonella, E. coli, and Shigella can lead to food poisoning, diarrhea, and vomiting.
  • Gastrointestinal Illnesses:
Dysentery, cholera, and typhoid fever are serious bacterial diseases often spread by flies.
  • Parasitic Infections:
Flies can carry and transmit intestinal worms like pinworms, roundworms, and tapeworms.
  • Biting Fly-Borne Diseases:
Tsetse flies transmit African sleeping sickness (trypanosomiasis), and other biting flies can transmit leishmaniasis and onchocerciasis.
Prevention and Control
  • Sanitation:
Practice good hygiene, such as keeping garbage cans covered and drains clean, to reduce fly breeding sites.
  • Food Safety:
Keep food covered and food preparation surfaces clean to prevent contamination.
  • Insect Screens:
Ensure all window and door screens are intact to prevent flies from entering your home. .." (Google)
